Food Campaigns

Who is doing what when it comes to campaigning for good food. Here is an arbitrary list!

The Fish Fight

Another campaign from Hugh Fearnley Wittingstall, this time aimed at trying to improve the lot of the fishing industry by trying to persuade the British to eat more and more varied fish while also tacking the issue of Discards.

Discards are where fishermen throw away perfectly good fish because they are over quota or because they caught a cod while fishing for Bass. Most of these fish die and rot – a complete waste. It is estimated that anything up to 60% of fish is discarded – and that is an estimate from the EU.

The campaign site is running the normal petition, but also has recipes!

Compassion in World Farming run the Good Egg Awards.

“In 2012 the EU ban on ‘barren’ battery cages will come into force. However, this still allows ‘enriched’ or ‘colony’ cages which still compromise hen welfare. We’re celebrating real leadership by awarding companies who go cage-free by 2012.

“Previous awards have taken place at venues like the House of Commons in London, the European Parliament in Brussels and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Look out for details of our 2010 Good Egg Awards, which will be celebrated at prestigious events in London and Europe.”

Chicken Out Campaign

Started by Hugh Fernley Wittingstall, this campaign has attracted some of the most media attention of any food campaign for years. Not always good, unfortunate, since the Daily Mail decided to try and wreck the campaign purely because they did not like Hugh – there was no other reason for it.

The campaigns aims are simple: wherever possible, chickens should be free range – and OUT of sheds. HFW is realistic enough to know that this will probably never be totally achievable as people want cheap chicken, but if at the very least we can get rid of the most extreme and cruel end of chicken production, we are going the right way.

Allied to this is the RSPCA Freedom Foods system which looks at the welfare of birds, however they are kept, and awards their support to those that get it right,.
