Allotment Update

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Okay, lack of photos here, but I will try and remember to take my camera up in the next few days. I have remembered to take the dog, some seeds and even some wood, but the camera seems to slip out of my mind.

What have I been up to? Well, I have been fiddling with lots of different bits. I have started rebuilding the wooden compost heap which is falling apart. I have been massacring some palettes for the wood, though one of them seems to be welded and has so far defeated my attempts to wrest the planks from it. The compost is a two compartment affair that I built when we first started a few years ago. It was only made out of feather board, so I am amazed it has lasted this long. The Frame is still good and sturdy, so I am just replacing the planks, reducing the air space (not getting hot enough) and will be putting proper covers on. Oh, and painting it red, for fun. What else? (more…)

Sausage and Baked Potato – Pure Comfort Food

Baked Potato with Sausage and TomatoDespite still getting some rather nice sunshine, there is more than a little twang of autumn in the air and I feel drawn to cooking good old comfort food! The other day I found some huge King Edwards potatoes and thought I could happily marry them to the big Cumberland Sausages our local Butcher makes. Okay, I don’t live in Cumberland so these are the butcher’s version of them – I am a great believer that local foods should be protected, so true Cumberland or Lincolnshire sausages should have to be made by local companies in the area. But apparently, the large manufacturers think they should have the right to ruin and undermine local produce. Despite that, these are still good sausages.

This recipe is dead easy but does require that the potatoes are baked in an oven and not gently steamed in a Microwave! Right, taties in the oven and grab some sausages, tinned tomatoes, onions and pancetta. (more…)

First Stew of the Season with spuds and gammon

Beef and Kidney StewWell, it has definitely gotten chillier! I could tell by the way my washing refused to dry outside and the sun refused to help. If we are going to have an Indian Summer, it certainly is not going to be this week. So what better way to celebrate the fall of summer than to get the stewpot out for the Winter season.

I like my stews and to get the first one going I took some of the best rump steak I could lay my hands on and topped the entire thing off with some good suet dumplings.

Right, dead easy recipe this:

New Potatoes with Rosemary and Garlic

New Potatoes with Rosemary and Garlic

There is a very good reason why have put the potatoes first in the title of this recipe – I picked them from our own allotment. These are Jersey Royal potatoes that we have grown ourselves, despite a conspicuous lack of rain. But by yesterday morning, the plants had died back on this crop and it was time to lift them. There is something especially wonderful about harvesting great product and dropping it straight into a pan. These were dug up at eleven o’clock in the morning and by six o’clock at night were boiling away in water. All that was required was to dress them up a little with rosemary and garlic to give them the respect they deserve.
